FAQ
Questions and answers
What coaching includes, how it works week to week, and what happens if life gets in the way.
The coaching
Who is coaching for?
Adults (18 and over) at any level: complete beginners, people getting back into training and people who already train. It suits busy, changing weeks and anyone who wants a clear plan and someone checking in.
What's included, and how much is it?
Coaching, £200 a month:
- A training plan built around your goals, equipment and schedule, and adjusted when your check-ins show it should change
- A nutrition plan with daily calorie and protein targets (no meal plans)
- A check-in after your first week, then every two weeks, with a video or phone call when it helps
- Messages on WhatsApp or iMessage any time, answered within two working days (Monday to Friday)
- Feedback on videos of your lifts, up to 2 a week
- A review at the end of each block, and your next block built from it
- Home gym planning if you need it
Programme Block, £100 one-off: a personal 4 to 12 week training plan to follow on your own, with one round of changes within 14 days. It has no check-ins, messaging or nutrition plan.
In Edinburgh: in-person sessions are £60 and mobile sports massage is £50 for 45 minutes. See personal training in Edinburgh.
Coaching or a Programme Block: which do I need?
Choose coaching if you want someone checking in, changing your plan when life changes and helping with food. Choose a Programme Block if you're happy training on your own and want a well-built plan. Not sure? Ask on the free call.
What happens on the free call?
It's 30 minutes by phone or video. We talk about your goals, your week and what has got in the way before. I explain the coaching and the price, and we decide together whether it's a fit. There's no obligation.
Please don't put medical details in the enquiry form. We cover your health privately in the questionnaire if we work together.
How does a check-in work?
After your first week, and then every two weeks, you fill in a short check-in form. It takes about 3 minutes: how much of your training you did, how hard it felt, your energy, sleep and stress, any pain or health changes, and your questions. Your plan lists your check-in dates.
I reply within two working days, and we have a video or phone call when it helps. You can also send an extra check-in or message me any time.
How do I log my training?
Your plan is a Google Sheet you open on your phone. Each week has its own tab with your exercises, sets, rep goals and rest times. You write each set as weight x reps (for example 80x8), and the Last week column shows the numbers to beat.
If a machine is busy or you're training at home, pick a swap from the Substitute list next to the exercise.
Do you provide meal plans?
No. You get a nutrition plan with daily calorie and protein targets, a meal pattern that suits your routine and simple rules for adjusting it. You log your food in any app you like, or use hand portions if you'd rather not track.
Your plan also comes with a ready-written prompt you can paste into an AI chat. Photograph your food and it estimates the calories and protein and counts them against your targets. It is there to save you time, it is not coaching advice, and anything about your health comes to me.
You weigh yourself on a set routine and we judge the trend over weeks, not single days.
What if I miss sessions?
Do the next session in order. There's no catching up. If you miss a week, carry on where you stopped and your dates move back a week. If your weeks are hard to predict, tell me and I'll plan fewer days or shorter sessions.
Health
I have an injury or a health condition. Can you still coach me?
Usually, yes. The private questionnaire asks about your health, medicines and injuries. Your plan works around current pain and builds back gradually. Some conditions need a doctor's OK before you start, and I'll tell you if that applies to you.
As a rule, pain up to about 3 out of 10 that settles afterwards is fine. If pain reaches 4 out of 10 or lingers, we back off. Coaching doesn't replace medical care or physiotherapy.
I'm on a GLP-1 medicine. Can you coach me?
Yes, and you're welcome. GLP-1 medicines include semaglutide and tirzepatide. Strength training and enough protein are the best-supported ways to hold on to muscle and strength while you lose weight, so your plan puts both first. Your protein target is set higher, and I check that you're eating enough, because low appetite makes under-eating the bigger risk.
If you're losing more than about 1% of your body weight a week, or struggling to eat, tell your prescriber and me. Your prescriber stays in charge of the medicine: I don't advise on starting, changing or stopping it. If you plan to come off it, we can prepare for that together. More in the GLP-1 guide.
What qualifications do you have?
I have a BSc (Hons) in Physical Activity and Health and a sports massage qualification, and more than 10 years in the industry. I'm not a doctor, physiotherapist or dietitian, and I'll tell you when something needs one.
Where and how
Where are you based?
Edinburgh, Scotland. Online coaching works wherever you train. In Edinburgh and nearby, I also offer in-person sessions and mobile sports massage.
Do I need a gym?
No. Your plan is built around the equipment you have, at a gym or at home. The questionnaire asks exactly what you own, so you're only given exercises you can do.
Can you help me set up a home gym?
Yes. I plan what to buy for your space, goals and budget, and how to lay it out. It's equipment and layout advice only, with no building work. It's included with coaching, or available on its own and quoted by scope. There's also a free home gym guide.
Can I train with you in person?
Yes, if you're in or near Edinburgh, and you don't need to take monthly coaching. Sessions are £60, at your home gym, my private garage gym or a gym in or near Edinburgh that allows visiting trainers. See personal training in Edinburgh.
Do you offer sports massage?
Yes. Mobile sports massage at your home is £50 for 45 minutes, in Edinburgh and nearby. It depends on availability, and coaching clients get priority.
Payment
How do payment and cancelling work?
Coaching is £200 a month, paid in advance, with no minimum term. To cancel, email or message me before your next payment date. Your coaching carries on until the end of the month you've paid for. If you're not happy within your first 14 days, you get a full refund.
A Programme Block is paid once. You can cancel for a full refund at any time before I deliver it. The full details are in the terms.
